We just got a 91 accord and the day after we got it, it had issues with wanting to start. We replaced the distributer because the one on there was leaking oil though the ear seal on it. Didn't fix the starting problem.
Here's what it is, The car will start up fine, then I drive somewhere and it will sit in a parking lot for a few minutes and I go to start it and it won't want to start when the car is warm I have to sit there like 15-20 minutes. Pretty much until the car cools down a little bit until I can get it to start again. Its getting fuel because I can smell the fumes when it actually does start.
I've heard it could be the main relay but I don't want to spend the money if that's not the problem! :mad: frustrating! Any suggestions??

Main relay. If you don't want to spend any money on the car, remove the old relay and resolder it yourself.

Well now its doing it in the morning when its cold too... could that still be main relay

Yes, it could still be the main relay. When you replaced the distributor, did it come with a new ICM (igniter) and coil or did you reuse the old ones? Most likely causes are main relay, igniter, or coil. Because of the age of your Accord, I would replace all of them and give your ignition system a new lease on life. I would go even further and replace the rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs, and wires, if they have not been replaced in the past 60,000 miles. Reliability and "like new" performance are a must with me, even on older cars.

Yes, if you had a blown head gasket the Check Engine Light would likely be on. Besides, you would be leaking antifreeze all over the place.

1. When you turn the ignition switch to ON (not START), does the Check Engine Light (CEL) come on and then go off after 2 seconds?

2. During this 2 second period, do you hear the fuel pump in the gas tank run?
3. When the CEL goes out, do you hear (or feel) the main relay "click"?

I need you to answer each numbered question. Your answers tell me a lot and affects the direction we go from here.

Heck through all the postings. You will see this is a very common problem, It appears to be the main relay. I have the same issue with my 91 accord. For now I simply allow it to cool for a few minutes then it always has started and runs fine.
