I have this set up

A bathroom split into two areas tub and shower in one, and toilet and lav in the other. I have 4 recessed lights on a switch, 2 in each area. A fan switch is also in this box.

I have another box at the lav with a receptical and a switch for a light over the lav.


I want to have the two lights in the tub and shower area on a switch in the box by the lav. What is the best way to do that?

A feed from the lav circuit to the lights?

Or a switch between the lights in the lav box?

Can you have more than one circuit in a box?

Yes, you can have more than one circuit in a box.
Be aware that there are duplex switches available that may help.

Lights can be fed from the switch or the light. Many times it's fed from the ceiling and the wire from the ceiling is the "switch loop".

I doubt I answered your question.

I take it that you have something like this (in principal) and that you want to put two of the ceiling lights on a separate switch. You must first determine if the present switch is being fed or if the ceiling fixture is being fed.

What's above this bath and where do you want to put the new switch?

I have attached a image of the room. If you can see it you can see the layout. There are basically two rooms.

Currently the overhead lights are all on one switch by the door. The vanity light is on a switch by the vanity.

Both switches are where the feed comes in.

As you can see I'd like the two lights in the bath/shower area on their own switch near the vanity.

I hope this makes it a little clearer.

Is that 2 doors and 2 windows?
If you don't have a window, you will need an exhaust fan, Some areas may require them and are not a bad idea.
Can you Use a 4/5 gang box and split things up(Cans, Vanity, Shower, Exhaust Fan)? Still need GFI
Forget the switch at the vanity.
What is the "T" in your drawing?
You could also use dimmers.

Tell us what switches controls what lights at the present time.

Show us where you want the additional switch.

Tell us what switch you want to control which light.

Do you have access to the space above the bath, i.e. attic?

Above the bath is the attic which I can access. There are two windows and two doors.

There will be an exhaust fan running from switch S1, I forgot to mention that.

T is the thermostat for the heated floor (seperate circuit)

Right now there is a 2 gang at S1 that feeds L1, L2, L4, L5 and the exhaust fan.

There is a feed at S2 for L3 and an outlet.

What I would like is to have L1 and L2 on S1 with the fan

I would like L4 and L5 on a switch at S2

L3 on a switch at L2 as well

I can get 3 gangs in the wall as well as dimmers

OK, so you are happy with the fan at S1 and you are happy with the outlet and the L3 on S2, correct?

We must determine the routing of the cable between S1 and L1,L2,L4 and L5.

Either go up in the attic and see how the cable is routed or

Go to L2. If there is two cables in that box, the routing should be S1 to L1, to L2, to L4 to L5 with only one cable in L5.

If there is only one cable in L2 the routing should be S1 to L1 to L5 to L4 to L2. Likewise there would be two cables in L5.

Routing could be something else but lets start here. Post back what you find.
