I have what I believe to be a jet well pump for my house. (There are 2 lines coming into the house) I also have a filtration system for hard water for the well. My Problem is pressure it is very weak. I unhooked the output line from the pump to see what kind of pressure I was getting from the pump, I got approx. 5 gal/min. It did not seem to be very good pressure but I'm not sure. I also adjusted the pressure switch, now I have great pressure when the water is first turned on(about 2 sec) and then it goes back to bad again, the whole system is probably 20 years old. I checked the bladder tanks air valve and only got air so I don't think the bladder has been ruptured but at this point I am out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated


Come on 24 people have read this and no one has an answer, someone give me something. Right now its looking like I am going to have to pay 200 bucks just to get a guy to look at it so if anyone has an idea I'm all ears

could be a bad pump or low water in the well, or you pump is sucking air around your fittings. If you lived in Florida, I would say water is low. Best way to check air leaks is to put a shovel on your fittings, and put the WOODEN handle to your ear and then cover your other ear. You can hear air sucking or gurgling. You can check your pump by filling a trash can full of water, cut your inlet pipe and rig it so you can draw from the trash can. If your pump is running right, it will suck the water out fairly quick. Make sure your temp. rig is about 2 inches from the bottom of the trash can. I am assuming that this is a shallow well? 30ft or less? I have over 25 yrs. Exp. With shallow wells, all in Florida. I do not your pump HP or any other variables. Hope I helped you in some way.

Vin, you have a pressure gauge (hopefully!) either at the pump or at the pressure tank. That is what you need to use to assess pressure. Getting 5 gallons a minute is pump volume, not pressure.

Anytime a filter or water softener is involved, the first step is always to bypass the filter. Have you tried that? Also, get a reading from the pressure gauge and get back with that. We especially need to know the pressure points at which the pump cuts on and cuts off.

Two more items.1. Watch the pressure gauge when you turn on a faucet. From what you are describing, you should see a pretty significant pressure drop in just two or three seconds. That little piece of information will tell you a lot.

2. Watch your pressure gauge when the pump cuts off and no water is being used. Pressure should hold steady for practically forever.
