Look at child support in a different way.
    OK, lets be creative here:

If a NCP is paying $1,500/month for one child for 18 years... total pay out at the end of the road will be a whopping $324,000!

    What can $1,500/month get us:

    1) monthly mortgage payment for 18 years (>50% of a mortgage for a $300K house)
    2) a nice 740 BMW (5 years)
    3) 60" plasma TV (3 months)
    4) 4 years of dental, medical, or law school at Harvard
    5) travel around the world (1 year of pay)

Man, the list goes on and on...

Then you think, it only costs $324,000 to raise a human being for 18 years?

Then you think, shoot, some professional athlete makes $324K in one month!

When you put $324k in perspective, is it a lot or it's not much at all!?

    Hello Way:

In perspective of what? If the father made several million during that time, then it's just about right. If he made about a million, then he got raped.

    Why do you ask?

It's a stir the pot question with the wrong math applied.

There is nothing added by the CP. That figure should be near double.

It wouldn't be right for the NCP to bear the entire burden of raising the child financially.

    My question is this:

Are you actually asking legal questions to get help for yourself?

Or are you here to start discussions about child support?

Discussions should take place in the Members Discussion boards.

This is a forum for LEGAL ADVICE.

Are you actually looking for legal advice? Or are you just here to stir up the pot some?

    Yup... it's a public forum.

    One that's moderated.

Just pointing out that if you're not actually looking for advice, but are trying to stir up dissent and discussion, there's a better place for it.

I will leave it for a bit and see where it goes. ( moderator)

The issue is that child support is a percentage of income and each area has its own forumla to figure out what the payment should be.

And it is not only a non custodial parent, even in joint custody, if one parent makes a lot more than the other, there is a support payment to balance the incomes to provide for the child.

The money is not to just raise the child, but it is for help with the house paymnet, car payment, light bill and more.

If the child comes from a family that makes 10,000 a month, then a couple thousand a month support is about right for that standard of living.

A child with a parent making min wage still has it harder and his parent has it harder.

A man making 10,000 a month can merely live at a cheaper life style and live on 7,000 a month,
But a man making 1,600 a month has a much tougher time living on 1000.
