I have a toro walk behind 22" mower. When I go to start it the recoil start is ripped back right out of my hand, which just about tears my arm off.
It is very hard to start but will after many arm ripping pulls.
What is wrong with it?
Thanks

Hi,
Replace the flywheel key. It is out of time. Modern ignitions will still allow the engine to run; just start hard and be down on power. You can thank the EPA for that as the modules have variable timing that accomplishes this.
Peace,
Clarke
Ok, I'll give it try, thank you. If it works you just saved me about $400 bucks.
I'll let you know.
Crigby, can't thank you enough!
I opened up the engine and you were right, the flywheel key was sheared and the fly wheel moved about a 1/4 inch.
Went and got me a new key for 3 dollars... installed it and she started right up.
Hats off to you!
Thank you, Mike in Connecticut.
