Child abandonment is a misunderstood term. It actually means to leave a child without competent adult supervision. If you separate from your wife, presumably she is competent.

Some states use abandonment laws to criminally prosecute if you fail to pay ordered support, but divorcing is divorcing and abandonment is a whole different issue.

If you want to leave, you leave. Just remember that you are still responsible for the well being of your child. I.e. don't leave them penniless and hungry.
