I have a 1983 onan generator (rv) it runs OK until you "load" the unit then it will die after about 30 seconds.

I would check the fuel flow from the pump. Often in these applications the fuel pump is electric. I will also say that a friend once had this problem and tried a non-original replacement with short-lived success.
