Ceiling light install from a wall plug that is on/off switch
I have a bedroom wall plug. There is switch that turns power off & on , on the lower plug. I want to be able to set the switch up to turn a new ceiling light on & off and just have the wall plug with permanent hydro. What is the best way to set this up.

You will have to run a new cable from the switch to the ceiling and rewire the existing outlet.

I second Chuck's question. We need to know what wires are in the switch, and what wires are in the outlet.

In the switch box there are 2 sets of wires . One set is a Black & White wire and the other set is a Red, Black, & White. The 2 whites are connected. The 2 blacks go to the bottom of the switch & the Red goes to the top of the switch.

The plug box has 2 sets of wires. One has a black & white and the other set is black, white & red. The 2 wire cable has the white going to the bottom left screw and the black goes to the bottom right screw. The 3 wire cable has the black going to the bottom right screw, the white goes to the top left screw, and the red goes to the top right screw. The screws on the left have the metal join entact. The screw on the right has the metal join removed.

I want to be able to install a ceiling light and the outlet can be a regular outlet set up.

Run 2 wire cable from switch to ceiling, install "old work" ceiling box. Use 14-2 cable if 15 amp circuit, 12-2 if 20 amp circuit.
At switch connect white to white. Remove red wire from switch and put a wire nut on it. Connect black wire to ceiling box to switch where red was.

At outlet box, remove outlet and discard. Cap red wire with wire nut. Install new outlet connecting black and white wires just as they are now.

I have a similar question, but I would like the wall switch to power a new ceiling light on & off and keep the wall outlet plug as is (continue to be turned on & off by the existing wall switch). In other words, keep everything as is but add a new ceiling light where there currently is no ceiling light. Is it safe to control both ceiling light and wall outlet from one switch and is it even possible?

If it is possible, what re-wiring do I need to complete?
