Ask Me Help Desk - Theft over 5k

Over the past year my oldest daughter has been getting into drugs rather badly... nothing heavy but doing it a lot. Here's where I become involved... her "friends" shall we call them were calling frequently and even showing up at my home. I began paying them the money tha was owed however I was stealing rent money to do this (I am working as a super intendant) I have been slowly paying it back without anyone knowing what was going on and I have since kicked my daughter (19 years old now) out of my home and have not paid anything for her in over a month. I still owe $5550 and was basically just fired because on the books it looks like several people are a month behind in their rent. I want to come clean and try to work out a deal with my now former boss to finish paying off what I owe but I am wondering what kind of legal penalties I am looking at if he doesn't agree to letting me pay him back. I live in Nova Scotia. I also do not have any prior criminal offenses. I have never done anything like this before and am scared.. I only tired to keep my child alive even though I went about it the wrong way and I'm afraid that if I try to turn in the dealers they will come after my 3 other young kids (7,10,12)

I don't know what you'll be charged with, but stealing from ones employer is a serious offense. If you can't make a deal, you'll have lots of problems AND you'll still owe the money.

If it was me, I'd borrow the money and pay him back CASH. And, I'd do that TODAY! That way, if you can't pay it back, you'll only be looking a civil penalties.

Coming clean could very well lead to criminal charges if he chooses to get the police involved. Like excon mentioned, stealing from an employer is a very serious offence seeing as how it breaks the trust relationship. Penalties are stiffer due to this.

I'm not sure I'd say anything to him, you did it because you thought you had too, I don't condone it but inder thecircumstances I sympathize with you. Also, turning in the dealers would not be such a hot idea in my opinion. I doubt the crown would be very receptive if your suggesting this to mitigate what you've done.

I wasn't suggesting the reason why I did it as a way to get out of trouble.. I did what I did after 41 years of never getting into any legal trouble. I came clean about it.. and all that was said was that I had 2 weeks to get the f$$% off his property.. pay back the money.. and never mention his family's name again or he would press charges. I did wrong and I admitted to it however I don't think it was necessary on his part to completely humiliate me and my family on the front lawn of our building and calling me everything but a white woman and stating that my kids were no better.

You ripped him off. I think he SHOULD have humiliated you...

Instead, you make HIM out to be the bad guy... But, he gave you a VERY BIG GIFT. You ought to be kissing his a$$ and thanking him for not going to the cops.

But, I don't see any mention of that. And, I don't see any mention about you trying to pay him back in the two weeks he so graciously gave you... But, not he's the bad guy.

Actually I'm NOT trying to make him out to be the bad guy.. I admitted I did wrong... have made plans for restitution. I could've avoided this humiliation by not telling the truth and either running away or putting him off until my loan came through and he'd have never known but being an honest person with the exception of this one time I admitted to my wrong doing as well as the resons for it and have accepted full responsibility for my actions.
