Our 10 week old puppy will NOT sleep at night
We have an Old English Sheepdog who is 10 weeks old-Benji. He has been with us for 5 days and he has settled in with us well. However, as soon as we put him to bed, he cries, barks, yelps etc... We have another dog- a 4 year old bichon frise, who he gets along with.Benji sleeps in the utility room downstairs, we bought him a nice big bed and he wees and poos in the garden before we go to bed. He barks and cries when we put him to bed, then he might sleep for an hour or 2, then barks and cries at early hours (3am,5am,6am). He gets praise when he gets into his bed, and gets told off when he comes out of it (at night). We try to settle him about half an hour before we go to bed, and he sleeps fine when we are with him, but as soon as we put him into the utility room, he just won't sleep. We have tried ignoring him, but he has a loud bark and we hardly get any sleep,my dad is finding it hard to cope as he is only getting 2 hours of sleep at a time. We are giving him 2 meals a day of puppy food provided by the vets and he always has fresh water. He will grow into a big dog,so my parents don't want him upstairs, and he can't sleep in the kitchen or living room because there are things in there which he can chew such as; wires,TV remotes and chair legs.Any suggestions, PLEASE HELP

I would try crating him and having the crate in your room.

He's a puppy, he's used to sleeping with his litter mates and mother, all of a sudden he's left alone in the utility room, he's scared, upset and misses his litter mates.

A crate, in your room, with a blanket and maybe a clock (the ticking noise sounds like a heart beat and may help soothe him).

The reason I suggest putting the crate in your room is that he'll be able to hear you breathing, moving around and that will help.

This has worked for every one of my dogs. As soon as they got older and started sleeping through the night, I moved the crate out of our room. Eventually they weren't even in a crate anymore, just slept on a dog bed on the floor.

Good luck with your pup. :)

Typical doggie problems. Put a soft radio in the room or a clock that ticks near his bed.

If your parents refuse to let him into your room with a crate, take an old pillow, fold it in half over a heating pad with a pillow case over it to hold it. Turn the heating pad on low and put it in his bed for him to snuggle with like brothers and sisters. A radio turned very low will keep him company when he wakes up.

No heating pad, dogs have teeth and can chew electric cord. Dogs are pack animals and he is lonely I agree with altenwig, but if you can't do that purchase a pet safe flat stuffed animal and place it in with him. He can cuddle it .

That's a great idea. They also have dog safe stuffed animals with a recorded heart beat for puppies, it helps them sleep. I'll have to look up the site but I found it once online, thought it was a great idea.

The key could be to have the other dog in there with him. Think about it, he is all alone while the other one sleeps with people. You may also want to exercise him right before bed so he is tired and don't put him to bed until everyone goes to bed. Make the room a positive, leave the door open and let him get comfortable being in there with the door open, give him a treat and lots of love when he goes in and lays down or explores! If he thinks of the room as a safe and secure place he won't mind being in there so much! He may also be crying because he has to go to the bathroom... it is hard for even adult dogs to go 8 hours without going, it's hard for most people. Pick up water just before bedtime (not directly after exercise though) and don't leave water down for him at night and if you do not very much.. his bladder isn't big enough to hold much!

Thank you for all your answers, they've been really helpful. I slept downstairs with him on Wednesday and he slept through the night as well as Thursday.
Just a question for Altenweg - Is it best for us to move his bed into the room where we want him to sleep permanently, in the day time so that he gets used to being in there?

Yes, I agree with most of the answers. Put a radio or a clock near him to keep him company. He's just a puppy and I'm sure he just misses having company. The crate idea is great too. Just make him feal comfortable at his new home.
