Proof needed to show I have paid my brother's tuition fee(as a deduction)
    Hi,

What kind of proof is needed while filing the tax to show that
I have paid my brother's tuition fee for that particular year so that I can claim it as a deduction ? I'm going to pay my brother's fee so I just thought let me first check this then I will pay

    Please advice

    Thanks

In order to claim your brother's tuition as either a deduction or as one of the education credits, you MUST be able to claim your brother as a dependent. That should not be a problem if you provide more than half of his total support AND if he is a U.S. resident.

However, if he is an international student on a F-1 or J-1 student visa, then he is a non-resident alien and CANNOT be claimed as a dependent on either your or your parents' tax return.
