    Retirement and unemployment in Virginia
My husband is retired Military after serving 22 years in the USN. He was working in the private sector and was laid off. He gets a monthly retirement. My question is. In the state of Virginia does your retirement count as income? We were told that it is counted as income and he will not receive benefits from unemployment because of that reason. I was appalled to say the least. He has worked his whole life and never drew anything from the government agency. It just seems unfair that they can use his retirement against him.

Where I work there are a few people that say they 'are retired' and collecting their retirement social security. We get laid off in May through Aug and they also collect unemployment.
Sometimes I think it is best to apply and see where it goes.
Did you already apply or is this what they are telling you before you even tried applying?

I know that in Ohio you can receive Social Security Retirement money and collect unemployment if laid off a job. They changed that law a few years ago so you could collect UE even if you collect SSR. Prior to that change in the law you could not collect both without a penalty to collecting unemployment.

Virginia may be one of the states that has not changed their laws yet to that effect.
