Hi everyone,
My German Shepherd is four months old now. I have ben feeding him Purina Puppy Chow and now should I switch to Adult dog food and to which I feed should I switch to.
There have been many discussions about dog foods among the several professional breeders and pet experts here. We have agreed to disagree about brands.
One thing we all seem to agree on is that you need to cut back on his protein. Purina Puppy Chow runs 26%, which is very high for an adolescent dog like yours. On behalf of your pup, thank you for caring enough to find out what he needs.
Check the protein content of the brands available to you, then buy several small bags and let your puppy tell you which one he likes. The healthiest food in the world does no good in the dish.
Dry chunk food helps keep teeth clean.
Exactly right Catsmine, there are too many different brands that people feed to recommend a specific one.
At 4 months old your shepherd should still be eating puppy food, do not switch to adult yet.
I am also in agreeance with Purina being too high in protein for a large breed puppy.
You need to find a brand with LESS than 24% total protein.
When a large breed dog is fed a high protein diet it makes them grow too fast and causes deformities in the bones and joints.
