Tonsils removed- seem to be growing back & giving me trouble I think?
I had my tonsils removed when I was 28 years old. I am now 41. I can see on the left side where it appears my tonsil is growing back, this side does not give me problems. It is very small however... not full size at all.

The problem is the right sided area. I cannot see any tonsil that appears to be growing back, but I can feel something back there when I have a sore throat or irritation. I recently had a sinus infection and my throat is still a little red where I have constant drainage from allergies (I take Allegra for this, but is doesn't seem to help too much)

Within the last week, the area underneath my tongue only way in the back (or so it feels) seems to feel swollen and reminds me of when I had strep throat constantly and my tonsils used to touch my tongue. (I did have a strep test run this past Monday and it was negative).

I have been smoking for the last 4 years and it never has bothered me (I have since quit as of last week) but after a heavy night of smoking (2 packs) that same area in my throat/back of tongue felt swollen. It has not gone away in 4 days and started to bother me. I went to my dentist about a cancer screening she said she didn't see anything suspicious. I have checked my lymph nodes and nothing is swollen or hard... but this nagging feeling in the back of my throat is really bothering me. I intend to go to my primary care and have them look also, and if not thoroughly satisfied, I will request an ear, nose and throat specialist.

My question is multi-faceted... Can tonsils that re-grow become as troublesome as the ones removed & has anyone else experienced this problem & what was the outcome?

I know I should never smoke, and it was stupid to do so, but I am not going to start again, nothing is worth the worry and potential problems.

    Thank you for your responses.:)

I had my tonsils removed a year ago and if I drink too much the area where they were becomes more irritated than it was when my tonsils where there, the reason I had them out was because my throat became irritated when I drank alcohol, now it is even worse. Sorry I can't help you more but I know what it feels like. I didn't know tonsils could grow back... great!! I hate them
