Agreement to split rent not specific enough
Hello--hoping to get some objective answers to this question.

Two roommates decide to share a 2-bdr house. One bdr is larger than the other so roommate A agrees to pay an extra $25/mo for the larger bdr. The total rent for the house is $750. Under this agreement, what does roommate A pay per month? Roommate B?

    THANK YOU!

Could this possibly be homework? If not, how old are you?

Hi Judy. I didn't realize I'd sound like a kid asking this question! Actually, I'm 47 and the mother of one of the two roommates. I'm just trying to give them some objective responses.

Sorry if I jumped on you. The Board is jammed with kids on Summer school - for good reason.

Here's how you figure it. Roommate A pays an extra $25 so that comes off the top. The balance ($750 minus the $25) is $725. That is split two ways or $362.50. Roommate A pays $362.50 plus $25 or $387.50; Roommate B pays $362.50. Total rent is therefore $387.50 and $362.50 or $750.

    - Now I'm going to take a nap. I'm exhausted. Math is NOT my strong suit.

Hi Judy: Thanks for taking the time to answer. I can see why you would think I was a kid in summer school; it certainly reads like a basic algebra problem. See--that stuff actually does get used in real life!

Sometimes I personally wish I had paid more attention - such as moments like this when I had to get out a calculator!
