    Leash training an old dog
We have taken in a dog that is about 8yrs old and I don't know how to train her to walk on a leash. When you put the leash on her and hold on to the end, she does not move. She acts scare of it. What do I do to teach her to walk on a leash.

Many people use a drag line, just a short leash you put on the dog in th ehouse and it get used to having it drag behind it. I don't use one with a new puppy. Usually getting out in front and coaxing it in an excited voice will get a puppy moving. My 10 week old Holly has been a little more difficult. Dropping back to beside her and running in baby steps while calling to her usually works.

You could try dropping the leash and walking away somewhere safe, a fenced yard or something. I have a lot of experience with young puppies. I expect the same techniques will have you posting back for help on pulling before long. I was recently at a training seminar, and the instructor liked the technique she liked for pulling was to walk backward a little. There were 75 dogs in the class, and the problem pullers seemed to be responding fairly well to the technique.

Any luck? I like a drag line, but try a leash without a handle so it doesn't get caught on anything. Also, tempting with food treats works well. Just don't make it a huge deal, when the dog trusts you it will happen.
