Brand NEW air conditioner doesn't power on but the outlet is working
    Hello everyone-

I'm hoping someone can help me solve this issue. My old air conditioner was not working so I replaced it with a new air conditioner (both window units). I plugged in the new air conditioner and it does not power on either. The outlet IS working. I have my computer power supply 3-prong working in the same outlet. I also tried plugging the a/c into another outlet and it will not power on from there either.

The plug leading into the new a/c unit has a test/reset button. The green light on this plug is ON showing there is power leading into the a/c unit.

But it still won't power on! How do I have the same problem with 2 air conditioners (one new and one old)?

Should I call Sears to replace the a/c or an electrician to replace a working outlet?

I would test the outlet for power. If the power is present then it is possible the A/C is bad. BTW Just because the top of the outlet is good that does not mean the bottom side is good. Test the outlet with a known item like a lamp to be sure the outlet has voltage.

Thank you for responding. I have tested both the top and bottom of the outlet with a table fan and all of the outlets have power. But my a/c unit does not. Is it possible that my brand new a/c unit has the same issue as my old a/c unit that it replaced?

Everything I plug into these outlets works but the a/c unit.

    Thanks so much.

It is possible to have the same issues but very unlikely. These outlets you tested are standard 120 Volt? What does the label say on the new A/C for voltage?

The outlet is actually a 20-amp outlet that was set up with a 15-amp outlet so I changed it back to 20-amp to allow the a/c to have more power if necessary. The voltage was correct according to the instructions.

However the a/c still does not work. Everything else I plug into this outlet works though and the tester on the new 20-amp outlet works fine. BTW I checked my fuse box and it says 20-amp for this connection.

Is it possible I could've short-circuited the a/c by turning it on using a 15-amp outlet on a 20-amp circuit? The a/c still does not work!

    Thanks.

    Is this a 120 volt A/C or a 240 Volt A/C?
