    Sheltie skin care
I have a sheltie 5 years old and have him groomed 6 times a year. In between grooming he gets a bath at home twice a month. He has a musty skin odor after about two or three days. I have spoken with the groomer and was told he has dry skin and I should talk to a vet about it. He doesn't have hot spots or skin disease but he starts scratching and shedding a lot. We have the dog trimmed every summer and this releives the problem for a while. What can I use to keep his skin as good as it should be. Does anyone else have this problem

You are bathing your dog too much. Twice a month is too much for a dog with a coat like a sheltie. You could add a supplement to his food, I use a tsp of vegetable oil in my walker hounds food when I notice her coat is getting dry.

Have you talked to the vet about it? It could be a skin infection that is causing the flaking and the odor. My Lhasa Apso used to get something similar that my vet used to prescribe an antibiotic and prescription shampoo and it would disappear - although it often came back every few years.
