I am 17 yrs old. Soon to be 18 in less than 6months, I was wondering if I could emancipate myslef from my guardian?. I lost my mother 2 yrs ago. And my father has nothing to do with me. My friends mother took me in and took guardianship of me. I don't see hardly if any money at all. I have to do all the work around the house, other than herself she don't ask anyone in the household to help but me I feel that I am a prisoner in my home. How do I go about getting out??

Is there a reason that you cannot hold a job outside of the home and earn some money for when you turn 18 and can move out?

Emancipation can be a lengthy process, with 6 more months to live in the home, you would unlikely have even been emancipated that quickly.

While emancipaton may not be possible because it is a lengthy process, there may be other routes. If you are the only one your age being forced to do chores, you may want to speak to someone about that. A school counselor perhaps? Pretty sure slavery was outlawed.

I don't understand what you mean you don't see any money at all. Are you expecting money? If you are referring to the money she gets from the state for being your guardian, that money is to care for you, not for you to spend freely.

I agree with steve, talk to a counselor at school if you can, and see what can be done. Or just wait it out 6 months.

Has this been going on all 2 years? Or just recently?

Suck it up and live with it. What your learning now is skills to survive when your on your own and with less then 6 months to go it wouldn't be worth attempting to go the legal court routes. When your 18 you will be free to do as you please. But try to remember this. Life isn't a cakewalk by no means and if you want something your going to have to earn it. There is ALL the chores to be done when your on your own and nobody will be there to help.

It has been going on all 2 years... and the money I get is from my dad for me 2 spend. I really don't c ne of it... and as far as school. Ill be 18 a little while after school starts.

Yes but I have basically lived on my own since I was 6 yrs old. Ik what the I'm doing and ik what I want and ik how to take care of myself. Trust me if you lived here you would hate it too.. and I don't mind doing chores it's the fact that there is three other people in the house and I'm the one who gets stuck doing everything. And don't get mouthy.. it don't get you anywhere

Second, if your father is sending you spending money and not support payments, then ask that he send it directly to you.

But the fact is, is even if emancipation were a possibility, you would need to show that you can live totally on your own. That means a job and apartment etc. That's going to take you more than 6 months to do so start now and you will be ready to move out when you reach 18.

Don't get mouthy?? I believe that I offered solid advice based upon your situation. So if you can't be an adult about it and absorb what it was meant to be then maybe your going to need those extra 6 months to grow up. Nobody is going to hand you a silver platter and send you down lifes road. And if you don't first start by respecting others then your journey will be very long and hard. Take that as you wish.
