    Miniature schnauzer
Okay, I happen to have an odd situation that I hope someone here will be able to help me with.

I have a 5 month old miniature schnauzer. At least 4 or 5 times a day this odd sound comes out of him. I want to describe it as a sort of purring sound. He does it at any given time, and I have no idea what is setting him off when he makes the noise. I've caught eye contact with him on several instances when he makes this purring sound, he doesn't appear as if he is any pain. I've even walked over to him after he has made the sound to see if anything is wrong, nothing.

I'm just wondering what the noise that he makes could possibly mean, am I supposed to understand anything from him when he does this? Or is this just some sort of unknown rarity from my pet?

Thanks to whoever can help me out with this.

I can't relate your description to anything I ever heard a dog do. Some things don't convert to text well. You should be in for shots and neutering before long, do what you can to describe it to the vet. Can you record it?

No, sorry, I can't record it. I apologize about not being able to describe it.

I'll be taking my dog to the vet soon. Family and friends have witnessed my do making the noise. No one seems the least bit alarmed by it. They all have family pets of their own so I trust their insight but I'd like to know for sure. I will certainly ask the vet about it.

(I want to believe that the noise he makes is for personal attention but I don't want to go off personal assumption and would rather know for sure.)

Thanks for trying to help, labman. I appreciate your efforts. :)

    Hello,

If it makes you feel better, I have a 5 month old, male, mini schnauzer that makes the same noise (and yes, I too describe it as purring). I was a little concerned at first, but took more notice of when it was happening, and here's what I've discovered:

My dog makes the noise when he is content (I'd say happy, but it's he's calm when I hear it). It’s often first thing in the morning when he comes out of his crate and we have quiet play time. And I've heard him when he’s lying on the floor just chewing on a toy, when I pick him up for a "hug", and especially after he's been fed.

I know I haven't really provided an answer to why it happens - but know that my dog does it too.

I was fortunate to have my mini schnauzer for 15 wonderful years and he too used to make this strange sort of throat noise. My hubby would refer to it as talking, and he used to do it every morning as a greeting. Very cute and we miss him very much.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your pup (well I certainly hope not) just an intelligent little dog trying to connect with you. All the best, enjoy your little bundle.

Our new puppy does it too. For him, I think it's minimal growling. He does it when he hears another dog barking in the neighborhood, or sometimes at the cat. It's sort of a pre-bark for him... and since it's relatively quiet, I'm much happier with him doing that than full out yelping!

I read that mini schnauzers have this low-pitch rumble of sorts, so I think it's pretty normal. However, we've only had our dog for a week now, so what do I know? :)
