The toilet in our bathroom leaked for quite sometime before the tenants told us about it, now, the floor is terrible I am afraid to even use the toilet - We want to replace the subfloor but are on a very tight budget so we need to do it ourselves. My husband is very handy, and I think that we can do it - but I need some advice from an expert. Is this something that can be a DIY project? Can you tell me where to start - thank you!

I wish I could see this floor but from what you say its likely the floor should be removed down to the joists. Is it freasible for you, with your skills, tear it all out or should we try to find a patch job to get your through, knowing it's a rental?

Remove the toilet, remove the floor covering in that area. Examine the extent of the damage. Try to determine what the flooring is made of (3/4" plywood). Is there any subflooring? Take pictures and post back with pics. If hubby is at all handy he should be able to do it. Need saw, hammer, cordless screw driver, nails, tape measure. You ain't building a watch so no great skill required, just time, a little plywood and mabe a couple 2x4's.
