Hello. Well anyway I went to the dentist a while back and he recommended braces because I have a overlap in my front two teeth. I came back and told my mom and she said she doesn't want me to have braces because my older sister had them and they have wrecked her teeth. I feel like I need them because they are effecting me abit, it rubs on my lip abit so annoying. I really want to get the overlap out of my teeeth. But many things are holding me back... My Mom doesn't want me to have them! Do they hurt being put on? How long will I have them on? Will it cost my parents a lot of money! Please help me out and answer my questions thank you!

I scrimped to make sure my son had braces and he did.:D

He only had them for 2 years, but everybody is different.

My niece had them for 1 year.

My God-Daughter just got them and she has no problem with them.

I never got them, my parents didn't have the money or insurance, but my life is still wonderful.:)

Ok thanks. I need them but what should I say to my mom she just says she doesn't want my teeth ruined cause my sister's got put on wrong cause the orthadontest here isn't good and 2-3 people with braces and they've been put on wrong and had a recieding gum or hole in their lip! What should I do?

Is that the only orthodontist in your area? Can your dentist refer you to a different ortho?

The length of time depends on the amount of movement needed. Not sure of your age, but if you're fairly young then the fact that your mouth is still growing will help them work a little faster.

How were your sister's teeth ruined? Often, many people aren't very diligent with dental hygiene while they have braces.

Most orthodontists accept insurance. Even if you don't have insurance they can work out an affordable payment plan for your parents. They may do a free/low cost consultation where he can outline your treatment (length of time, cost, methods) before you make a final decision.

Also, if you need very little movement, there are other options. Check with the orthodontist and he/she may have a treatment plan for you that doesn't include braces. You can achieve some movement through certain removable appliances (retainers, expanders, springs). No harm in looking into your options.

I had braces growing up. Did I hate them then? Sure did! Am I glad that I got them now that people always compliment me on my smile? Sure am!

I never had braces and my teeth are crooked, but the genuine smile always makes people happy.

I still feel EVERYONE should have braces! :D

Hey why don't you consider the option of on placing crowns on the teeth that are Mal aligned,discuss this option with your dentist,he will do the crown cutting in such a way that when he will place crown on your teeth they will look like you never had an overlapping...

I wouldn't recommend this because the OP sounds young and braces/orthodontic treatment would be best this situation. No need in trimming the natural teeth unnecessarily. Plus, the cost of crowns would be considerably more expensive than orthodontics.

Because crowns are expensive. Fact. The OP stated cost as an issue with her parents. And again, I don't see any point in having her natural teeth prepped for crowns where the overlap may be corrected with orthodontics.

I agree with you nikosmom. The OP does sound young and I wouldn't recommend the crown route until he/she is 18 or older. I hate the thought of two perfectly healthy teeth being trimmed for crowns and to tell you the truth I've never seen a good cosmetic correction with only 2 crowns, it usually involves 4-8 to look natural.

thank you to all of you. I am really thinking things through. But I was speaking to my dentist and he did say the overlap will go with ageing and growth. So he said braces are just to get it out quicker. But He said its all to me. So I'm thinking everything through. Thanks to all though!! :)

I think you should use invisalign braces which is very easy to use and you doesn't face any kind of problems. You can also remove it according to your requirements. It will give better shape to your teeth. So, you must try it. It comes bit costly so if your parents are unable to afford it then you can ask your insurance company for orthodontic insurance which will help you to bear the cost of braces adjustment.
