What type model Television? Is this an HDTV? How is it connected to the cable box? Have you checked the connection to the cable box? Have you selected the proper input on the TV?

How is the cable box connected to the TV? What type of connection is in use. There is an "F" connector (antenna input), a composite video signal (RF connector), or an advanced connection (Component video, HDMI, S-Video)?

F-connector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RCA connector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Composite video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Component video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HDMI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

S-Video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's important because the type of connection determines how you view the program. You only use a channel selector if you're using the antenna input (F-Connector). If the TV is 15 years old, it's unlikely that you have component video or HDMI. You might have an S-Video connector.
