    Air conditioner short
I have a Whisper Aire split unit 18,000BTU air conditioner and live on a small island. All of sudden it just quit due to the breaker shorting out.

I took the lazy path and replaced the breakers however that wasn't the problem as the breaker tripped after about 30 seconds.

Any idea what might be the most COMMON problem that would cause this.

It is only a couple years old.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Sounds to me like the compressor is grounded... if it trips that quickly. Only cure is new compressor.

Usually when a compressor shorts to ground, the breaker will trip right away, or at least within a second or two. Thirty seconds makes me think maybe the compressor is froze up(but usually the internal overload on the compressor would trip before the breaker in this case.) Can you tell us if you hear the compressor running, and is the fan on the outside unit running? Please let us know and we will do our best to help.
