    1) Replace them. Use 1/4 turn ball vavles instead of gate valves. Ball valves will last longer they do not restrict flow and they make them in chrome if they will be visible if that is an issue.
    2) Once again replace it with a ball valve this is the most critical valve. If a pipe breaks you'll be glad you did
