To install a stand up shower next to a window, our contractor is telling us that he has to move the window because is too low. Is this something that has to be done? Also, he wants to sheetrock the entire bathroom with water resistant sheetrock.
Can't we keep the sheetrock that the 1/2 bathroom has right now and just tile on top?

If window is not interfering with shower, see no reason to move.

It is no problem tiling over existing s/r if not in a wet area(inside shower).

It sounds to me as if this guy is imposing his preference as a requirement. If the window doesn't interfere, there's no real reason to move it, if your happy enough with it. Also, the green board he wants to install would be a good idea, but certainly not necessary. In the shower area you cannot keep the SR, nor should you use green board (the water resistant stuff). You need Dura Rock or some other type of waterproof board, trust me on that one. For the ceiling over the shower 5/8" green board should be sufficient.

Kniever if the shower your installing is fiberglass with surround then then green board or blue board is fine for the whole alcove and ceiling. Use a kilz/binz as a good primer sealer before painting it. Also tint the primer to the color you are going to as the finish paint color.

The only reason to downsize a window at all would be on its widths not heights unless for some crazy reason its actually in the shower alcove and there is 12 foot ceilings and the window is ABOVE the shower on the same wall.

At times we run into the problem when there is an old cast/steel tub and old tiled alcove walls. The bathroom window trim is to close to the new fiberglass shower nailing flange
