Receiving subsidy and evicting roommate
State: New Jersey
A man I'll call Ed, and appears to be in his late 40s-early 50's, is on SSI due to mental illness and receiving a housing subsidy. 2 yrs ago, his "friend" asked if she could stay with him for a short time while getting back on her feet. Shortly thereafter, her capable, adult son moved in as well. They have never paid rent and have taken terrible advantage of Ed's generosity. Her son recently came into some money (I didn't ask how), but instead of helping Ed as he promised, the son sneaked around and bought a car. At most, and only since the "new" money, the son has occasionally handed Ed $10 or $20 when asked.
Ed knows he is in the wrong for allowing these people to live with him for so long, but he thought it was short-term and is now unable to get these users to leave. He's also scared of losing his ssi and housing. Can he evict them without getting in trouble? I don't think he can just toss their stuff out and change the locks, but can he give a written 30-day notice without going to court? As I said, he suffers from mental illness and got into this mess by trying to help someone out. He feels terribly confused and betrayed by his non-"friend" and wants them both out. How does he get rid of them? Thank you for your help.
