    Plant respiration
Under normal conditions, the plant opens its stomata during the day and closes during night (photosynthesis occurs during day time). However, respiration occurs during day and night. How does the plant achieve gaz exchange (O2, and CO2 produced during respiration) if the stomata is closed?

    Thank you
    Regards,

The answer you’re looking for may be found in this abstract about Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). In a nutshell, 24-hour CAM occurs by phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) carboxylase fixing over the night to form malic aicd that is stored in plant cell vacuoles. While stomata are tightly closed the following day, malic acid is decarboxylated releasing CO2 for C3 photosynthesis.
