I'm building a house and a shop on a couple of acres in the middle of nowhere. The house and shop are about 180 ft apart. The house is about 4,000 square feet (400 square feet per warm body, so actually not that extravagant). I plan to put a little apartment above the shop. The shop is a pipe dream at the moment--maybe in 5 yrs, maybe in 10.. .

The poco is going to set a pad transformer exactly halfway between the house and the shop. I want to set a service entrance on a pole right next to the transformer. This service will feed both the house and the shop. It also needs to feed a little well house that has a little subpanel to run a submersible 240 pump, and a couple of lights and outlets.

I want only one meter for the whole show!

The poco wants the service entrance to have CTs, which I understand is short for current transformers. My electrical supplier recommends a Square D SU3040D400CB.

After all that windy background, my question is, does that particular Square D device sound like the correct thing to do what I want? The "D" in the Item Number stands for "Dual Main Service Disconnects" which sounds like what I want--one for the house, one for the shop, but I'm not sure.. .

The "B" at the end of the item number means there's a "Class 320 Test Block Bypass" which I hope will satisfy the poco. That's a question I will ask them, but any comments are sure welcome, particularly a translation of that term into layman's terms.

The test block bypass is used by the utility to test the meter. It bypasses the meter so you don't have to disconnect the service to run tests, and also gives the technician terminals to connect his test equipment.

Only the utility can tell you if this unit is acceptable.

Do you realize the Square D unit you provided has a 30 circ uit panel built in? Yes it has two 200 Amp Main Breakers, one for the panel and another one for a 200 Amp feeder to a remote panel.

Yes there appears to be a section that can have the utility test switches installed.

In addition to this meter, did the poco tell you that a CT cabinet will be needed? These are usually 3 ft by 3 ft.
