I noticed that my well pump is cycling to often. After the pressure drops below 30 psi the pressure switch contactors engage and the pump starts. The pressure rises to about 40 psi in a minute or so and then the pump cuts out even thought the pressure switch contactors are closed. After about 2 or 3 minutes the pump starts running again. After a minute or so it then shuts off. This continues for about 10 minutes until the pressure reaches 50 at which point the pressure switch contactors finally disengage. The tank seems to hold pressure at this point.

Any ideas about why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Is the pump above ground or in the well?

Sounds like Pumptek is shutting off pump. This is a safety feature to keep pump from burning out if well goes dry.

After a set time, pump will come on. The well as replenished some water. Cycle repeats.

Have well man check it out.

Crea, I don't think you are right on this one. That feature kicks in when water pressure drops BELOW the cut in point. It doesn't sound like that's happening in this case. Besides, if the contact points are closed, then the pump should be running.

I have a different take on it. If the motor overheats the thermal overload switch will throw out and shut down the pump. That way the control box contacts would still be in the closed position calling for power. Feel the motor housing, does it get hot? Let me know, Tom

I agree with that, which is why I asked if the pump is above ground or below. If it's submerged, then we're back to square one.
