I have a Symmons Temptrol shower fixture model S-96-2 on which I would like to replace the flow control spindle (Fig TA-10 on the diagram). I would like any hints on unscrewing the Cap (TA-12A) which seems to be frozen in place. I have set the opened the valve to the mid position as indicated in the Symmons instructions "Open valve to warm position and unscrew the cap." Unfortunately the Cap will not budge. I'm afraid to exert too much pressure with the wrench as I do not want the pipes/joints to rupture.

That cap just spins out counterclockwise... just need to hold against yourself as best you can and use a large enough wrench to loosen the "cap". Be careful not to drop the wrench... ;)

I had the same problem. I sprayed the brass T-11 cap gasket seam with WD-40 and waited 30 minutes or so. I came back with a good 'monkey' wrench and a hammer. I put the wrench on and gently tapped the handle of the wrench and after only two taps--- voilà! It started to turn. I was then able to uncrew it with little effort.

As you had indicated above,it is noted in the Symmons instructions that you must first open the valve to warm position and then unscrew the brass cap gasket . Do not attempt to remove the cap gasket that holds the TA-10 spindle without doing that first. When you unscrew the T-11 cap gasket the whole spindle assembly comes out with it. Just unscrew the spindle and replace it with a new one. Then reassemble everything in reverse order. Mark above stated not to "drop the wrench." It could do some serious damage and not just to your foot! I always but a good heavy towel or blanket in the shower when I am working with any tools like this to prevent a chip or worse if I should ever accidentally drop something.
