We bought our new home one year ago. 3 weeks ago we detected moisture under our tile in main bath and under floor boards in adjenct bedroom. The builder tore up tile and floorboards and exposed a lot of water. It was determined that the seal on the toilet was never installed properly and has been leaking a small amount of sewage for the last year. My question has to due with health issues. The odor was horrible. There has to be bacteria. My wife has asthma. How do we assure ourselves that all the bacteria and what ever else has not distributed itself through the entire house? We have central air and heat.

This issue would bother most folks but the fix is in the hands of your builder. He could spread lime over the soil to kill the bacteria.

I am not a biologist - but they sell all kind of anti-mold, anti-bacteria sprays that you can apply. Even simply Lysol in spray can claims to kill mold and most of the bacteria.

Expose the wet area as much as you can. Take large fan, point it on to the wet area and let it run until dry. Do not apply any heat. It should be all done under regular temperature with open window. ( High heat and wetness are the catalyst in mold-growth ). Once completely dry, apply anti-mold spray. Let dry. Then, cover up...
