Usually, it's as simple as setting up the router and connecting using the Wireless wizard on your laptop. When you say "connect my d-link wireless router remotely" what, exactly do you mean? How "remote" are you from the router?

You might be having trouble with the encryption (WPA or WEP). Try disabling that and see if you can connect. Make sure Windows Firewall or some other personal firewall or Internet suite isn't preventing you from connecting. Make sure your laptop is configured to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and make sure the d-link box is set up to act as a DHCP server (gives out local IP addresses).

Once you have connected, disconnect and select the proper security (encryption) -- WPA2-PSK (pre-shared key) is the best, but I believe that Windows XP doesn't have support for WPA2 (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) wo you'll want WPA-PSK (d-Link may have different terminology). Vista definitely does have support for WPA2. WEP is not secure -- there are programs "out there" that can easily break it.

If you have trouble setting up WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK, Google "d-link WPA-PSK".
