Most likely if this is his first offense he will have to pay a fine of at least $250. And take classes about shoplifting. He can also ask about getting any record of it expunged after so long and no other problems.

You could also expect some probation and/or community service. I was in retail security for 13 years and never prosecuted anyone for such a low amount except those who resisted arrest or committed an assault. The retailer losses too much money by having their people spend time in court.

Oh my god.In Ireland they wouldn't even bother bringing someone to court or that...

Yeah that's what I was saying. It would be a monetary loss to the company to have their people spend hours in court. But the use of violence to resist arrest or assault people makes it an entirely different ballgame.

Yeah well that would be another offence,so just make sure he doesn't resist in any way.Im sure itl be fine.

Well it already happened, I hope he didn't.

It might be dropped by the time he stands in front of the judge. I have been in a little more serious situations when that ended up being the result.

My daughters boyfriend stole little cheap things from Wal Mart that didn't amount too much. Got caught and had to go through the whole mess of court, fine and classes.
I said to him "Now don't you wish you had just paid the $18. Instead. Now you have to pay $250. And go through the court mess''.

Shoplifting and theft is such a serious issue and cost to stores, we have one major grocrey store where I am told they have @ a 10 percent lossage of stock to theft each year.

So the costs are passed on to us. For example a 10 dollar item most likely costs a dollar more due to theft costs
