My wife and I just bought a new business a week ago. It's a retail store. Somehow in the bathroom the toilet got messed up. I don't know what it is or anything.

Here is a quick description.

I used the toilet today, so did other people.
The sink worked earlier, and still works now.
The place used to be a nail store, so there is a extra set of pipes made for doing pedicures (the valves do still operate and work)
The toilet just stopped filling up with water

My wife walks out and says the toilet won't fill up. I only had a few minutes and no tools, so I just looked at it, the water was still turned on, it wasn't clogged.. and I'm not sure what else to check.

What are some quick steps I can run through tomorrow? I need to get this working asap.

Tell us what type of ballcock that you have?

It is either blockage at angle stop or at fill valve. Close and Open angle stop and see if that helps. Then, answer Tom's question and he will tell you how to clear the fill valve.

Also, it could be debris in water supply line that connects angle stop and fill valve.

First, see if you can lift the float #1 rapidly, several times. Sometimes it dislodges debris in fill valve...

Take phillips screwdriver, remove the 3 brass screws on top of fill valve, place towel over it, reach under the toilet and open angle stop for few seconds. It will flush all debris from the fill tube. Reinstall removed parts. See if that works.

You can also go to Home Depot and purchase new fill valve - the one shown on the left. They are called "Fluidmaster A400" and cost around $10.00. They are very easy to install. You can come here and we will lead you through installation process.

OK sounds good. Ill try those techniques real quick when I go back. I already bought a new fill valve..

Dan, when you try to replace that fill valve you will need to close the stop valve under the toilet tank. While it is closed disconnect the supply line at the top where it connects to the fill valve, now slightly crack open that stop valve just to be sure you have a good flow at the valve. While its likely the fill valve the stop can also be clogged with debris.

Weird. I went to the store today and it was just working like normal. What do you think happened? Something dislodged itself from the blockage?

It could have been a blockage in the seat or supply that worked its way on through. If it happens again simply replace the ball cock. Good luck, Tom

Yep, a fill valve, once in a blue moon , can actually fix itself if it was clogged with debris. I have not been so lucky yet.
