I have a two year old daughter; she turned two a few months ago.

So far she shows some interest in potty training but then again I'm not so sure, she hates sitting on the potty [the big one], I did buy her a little one; she thinks it's a toy.

I do work Monday-Friday 9-5 type thing. I want her to use the potty but since I won't be there all the time as most moms are I don't know how to do it.

How do I teach her if she's in her diaper most of the time? Wouldn't that just confuse her?


If you have any suggestions or advice about it I'd really appreciate it.

Who is with her when you are not?

From 9-5 she's with a sitter.

Unfortunately no.

She's an O.K. sitter. Feeds her, changes her diaper [the basic stuff]-- but if I had more money I'd definitely get a better one.

I'd wait until I could take a week off work (when she shows some interest in going potty). Meanwhile, read potty books to her (library?) and check out toddler potty videos or DVDs (yes, they exist).

Remember that she is still two. For me and my 4 children I waited until they trained themselves. Kids don't go to kindergarten in diapers.

You will have a much easier time if you wait until she tells you that she is ready.

I've been feeling a little guilty with her being 2 and still in diapers. I know I shouldn't compare but I have friends whose kids are around her age or just turned 3 that are potty trained.. but then again they are stay at home mothers...

I also have a two year old daughter who we are trying to potty train and it is difficult when you work full time. Just be patient with her and try not to push her too much. When she's ready she'll let you know believe me. You might try using the potty seat that fits on the regular toilet and see if she shows more interest. My little girl loves using the potty seat because she can put it on the toilet herself. I know wal mart usually sells the potty seats fairly cheap. Try offering a reward such as candy or a sticker every time she pottys or poops in her potty chair or toilet. But be sure to only give her that particular item when she does potty in the toilet or potty chair. Because if you do give it to her no matter what, then it'll really confuse her. Good luck and remember to be very patient with her no matter how frustrating it might be.

I say if you want to go for it, then go for it. If you see signs, then she is seeing and thinking about it. (I never used the little potty) In the evenings and weekends, you could start it all, you could get her some undies and let her wear them, if she goes in the toilet give her a few pieces of her fave treat. Maybe by the end of summer she could start wearing them with the sitter. You could just say hey, she is getting potty trained now so if I want this to work, I need her to go to the bathroom frequently so we can stop regular accidents. Just my opinion. Taking a week off work sounds a little hard, especially if you can't afford it. Waiting for them to potty train themselves is an option, but if she is showing signs, then maybe she is ready and think of the money saved with no diapers...

Here are a few things:
-She dislikes the big potty [I even bought her a dora seat that goes over the big potty]. She gets scared, maybe because it feels too high?
-The little potty she does sit on so I really think she'd be better with that [although I would much rather prefer the seat but well as long as she learns right].
-She dislikes wearing underwear, she still likes her "diapees"
-She does however tell me, not right away, that she's dirty.
-She understands the whole cleaning process
- I have showed her how I go potty and showed her how to "wipe".
-She's seen some tapes and vids- from elmo to dora and well she never really sits still to actually watch the whole thing. I do however grab the opportunity to point out that she has a potty herself.

I think she is borderline ready- hope that made sense.

I do think it's best for me to wait a little longer till she's "actually ready" and keep at it with the books and vids and showing her how mommy does it.

Muddy. Both my kids were late potty trainers. One thing I did realize, if you're serious about potty training, and you're sure she's ready, then get rid of the diapers, do not use pull ups, buy underwear and that's it.

Also, and each child is different, my kids never used the potty chair I bought. I bought the fanciest one that money could buy, it played music if you did your thing, neither one of my kids was impressed. I ended up buying a 2 dollar seat that fits on the big toilet, that did the trick.

My sone was almost 4 by the time he was potty trained, same with Sydney, but once they had it there was no turning back.
