My goddaugter's blackberry 8830 (bought used, sight unseen) loses power and shuts off when she enters the subway, i.e. it loses the signal. Any ideas?

It actually loses power or it loses the signal? If its just losing the signal that's not uncommon in tunnels. I always lose the signal if I'm riding underground.

She states power, and is pretty technical. I am wondering if the battery is weak, and cannot handle the drain of searching for a signal. I will doublecheck on signal though.

If its actually power, I've never heard of a phone losing power completely just from losing the signal. But I'm not an expert. She might want to take it to her service provider, like a verizon or t-mobile store, whoever she uses. If its just in need of a new battery she'll be able to buy one there. And if its something more than that they should still be able to help her.
