Should I be concerned that my sump pit has not filled with water during intense storms? We have been hammered with heavy rain. There is no basement water damage but there has been water against my foundation wall, due to a grading issue.

Hello, some basement homes have gravel around the base of the baseent and a perferated pipe that goes to the sump as a backup systtem should the soil not absorb the rain water. How old is your home?

If foundation walls are not wet or damp, no worries.

Unless u have underground spring in area, sump will not fill.

Thanks for the reply. My home was built in 1985. It is slightly elevated grade-wise, with a completely underground finished basement. We just moved in 2 weeks ago, so I'm not familiar with the character of the house. I'm perplexed because no water has collected in the crock and there have been over 70 gallons of standing water removed from the side of the house over the past 2 weeks. This was due to the intense storms. There are 2 lines that are feeding the sump crock. I understand, no water is a good thing. In my former home the sump would kick on with every rain. Trying to make sure that it sounds like a good thing to others.

If I were u, I would look into the reason for all that standing water.

Clay soil? Bad gutter layout? Gutter drain?

Standing ground water? How was it removed? Have you considered building a french drain around the foundation? Do you need instructions on how to do so? Let me know, Tom
