I would ask if there is any hope for my yellow hair. Every time I dye my hair ash blonde or any other blonde they come yellow or orange. I am light brown naturally, have fair skin and blue eyes so there should not be a problem. But hairdresser refused to do what I asked her and put 3 different colour highlights in my hair( 3 years ago). Than I coloured them by myself at home came out orange than yellow. Recently another hairdresser coloured my hair said ash was not a problem but again they came orange and than yellow. After putting third colour and highlights they are really gold blond and I hate it. I have no more money for hairdressers. Please tell me what can I do to achieve my long wished for ash blonde. I am not asking for a very light one but just not yellow one. What would be the cheapest way, could putting violet based toner solve my problem?? ANd what is the cheapest option??

Are they using single-process haircolouring or are they bleaching the hair and then toning? The reason I ask is because people with problems with yellow hair are almost always using single-process haircolouring. I also need to know your natural haircolour so I can figure out whether a single process haircolouring is even capable of lightening your hair past the yellow stage.

Single-process haircolouring uses hydrogen peroxide (aka developer) to lighten the hair. The developer does a dual role in that it develops the colour (chemically, it polymerizes the dye and makes it insoluble so it deposits in the hair shaft). The actual shade that is selected doesn't influence the lightness that is achievable. There is a definite limit to how light hydrogen peroxide can lighten the hair. As hair lightens it goes through several colours: Dark Red, Red, Orange, Yellow, and finally Pale Yellow. Depending on the colour you started with, it may not be able to get past one of these stages, and unless you get at least to the yellow stage (for dark blondes) or pale yellow (for light blondes or blondes that have difficulty with yellow), you end up with too much yellow in the hair.

When there is a lot of natural yellow in the hair or when you want to lighten quite a bit, using an ash blonde shade will reduce the yellowness -- because the formulators of the ash blonde put a lot of violet and blue in the colourant to counteract the yellowness.

I can't recommend anything until I know whether they used single-process haircolouring or whether they used hair bleach and until I know your natural haircolour (even if you may not have seen it in a while).

She actually put 3 colours first ash blonde, than dark blonde and third I don't even remember but it came from orange to yellowy kind. Yesterday she gave me a silver wella coloring shampoo violet based but that didn't do much for me, please help

I think it's clear that your hairdresser is afraid of bleaching and toning. Weaving three colours may earn her some extra money, but after two weeks, you won't even notice the difference in yor hair colour.

I would suggest bleaching foiled highlights throughout the hair. This will break up the yellow colour and since it will lighten past the yellow stage, it will reduce the brassiness. The highlights could be toned -- or not. Be careful not to let them bleach past the pale yellow stage.

As another alternative, you could bleach it to pale yellow and then tone it. Your hair is apparently pretty light right now so you won't have to use color remover on it. Whatever you do, get a colorist who isn't so frightened of bleach!
