When do I know vaginal bleeding is a menstrual period or something else?
I have had heavy bleeding for 3 days and this is very unusual for me, never had this before. When should I be concerned that its something more than a period.I have had times where I have soaked through a tampon and pad in an hr. or less. Can stress cause this much bleeding, and its not letting up at anytime, a little less when I'm sleeping.

When you say its soaking through a pad or tampon so quickly, what absorbency are you using? My flow is usually pretty light but occasionally it will get heavy. But since I'm expecting it to be light I'll put in a light tampon and an hour later I have to switch to a higher absorbency because it's soaked through. If that's not the case with you though, and you're already using higher absorbency products, it can't hurt to call your dr. aside from the heavy bleeding you're not used to, are you experiencing any other symptoms or anything to lead you to believe it could be something other than your period?

I am already using super plus tampons and a regular absorbent pad(with wings),but why I'm considering this unusal was because I had just finished my normal period less then 11 days earlier and that was longer than usual but not as heavy as this one is.Nothing other than the flow is irregular, if I had more concerns I would have gone to a walk-in.My family doctor is an hr away so very inconvenient.

One of my cousins had irregular periods like that all the time. Hers went on for at least a year though. She would have a regular period. Then days later she would bleed heavy like that. Or she would bleed for weeks. Then no period for two months. Totally unpredictable. The dr finally put her on because so that her cycle would be regulated. Plus, its common for because to lighten women's flow. It helped her a lot. But if this is a one time thing for you because might not be the best solution for you. For now, I'd wait and see a bit longer before I started worrying.

If you are soaking through in an hour or less, you need to seek medical treatment.

Heavy bleeding (extreme heavy bleeding) can be a miscarriage. It can also be very normal. There is not one person in this world who has the perfect period ever. Sometimes woman just get heavy bleeding. If you have pains on the side of your abdomine (stabbing sharp pains) it could meen a one of your tubes have busted and to seek medical attention immidiantly.
