    Epilepsy & St. Bernards
Our St. Bernard is almost 4 years old and was diagnosed with epilepsy. She is presently on phenabarbetol and we have had good luck with controlling the seizures. Since she started the medication in April 2009, she has only had two seizures. My question is this, I read an article about giving dogs Melatonin if their seizures occur between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am, which is the timeframe my St. Bernard is experiencing her seizures.

Has anybody given their dogs Melatonin to help control seizures along with the medication prescribed by the vet?

How did I miss this question. I hope you check back.

My lab has epilepsy, used to have 12 or more seizure per day for months on end.

He was on Phenobarb as well, the seizures didn't stop completely but they did decrease, but the meds left him dispondent, cathardic, not himself.

One vet told us to feed him green beans. So we did.

He's been off the phenobarb for around 6 years now and seizure free.

I know it sounds strange, such a simple solution, but it worked for us, and many other dogs I know.

    Good luck.

I will let you know how it goes. Should the green beans be fresh, or are cooked/canned okay? Also, do you remember how much you fed your lab??

Cooked, 1 cup a day, not canned, fresh. Mix it in with the regular food.

I hope it works. Good luck.
