Roots / bleached then died darker - demi color fading
OK, so here's the deal. I have long hair past my mid back. At one point my entire head was bleach and platinum blond permanent color applied. I had it that way for a few months. Then had a medium golden blond permanent color applied had that for a couple months. Then just had highlights added to break up the roots growing in a bit. Recently I had it died a dark ash blonde and it was too grey/green on most of m hair, but the roots were more copper (about 3 inches of growth) Out of frustration I went back and had them use a filler and dye all over a light medium brown. Still the roots look awesome, but totally different color than the rest of my hair. So FRUSTRATING. So at the suggestion of my stylist we did a demi permanent mixing 6W (dark Sand) and 6N (Dark Natural Blond) by Wella and the color was pretty even for the FIRST DAY! I love this color combo and would ideally like this color permanently. The problem is it fades after like 3-4 washes and the roots end up being significantly different color than the rest of my hair - - once again! I wash my hair every two days and I use color protecting shampoo and conditioner by Matrix when I do wash.

I really don't want to have to color my hair every week & a half! What can I do to fix the root issue when the color fades and get the color to hold longer?

    HELP, HELP, HELP!!

This isn't a perfect solution, but it will probably help.

I lighten my hair, and then on top of the all-over color, I have highlights and lowlights put in every couple of months. I have no problems with the all-over color or the highlights, but the lowlights - since they're a deposit of color on top of my previously dyed hair - fade out quickly, just like you're experiencing.

After much trial and error, I discovered a shampoo that works much better than the others - far better than even the expensive salon color-safe shampoos. It's called Citre Shine. Here's a link to Drugstore.com's website, but it's available at lots of stores, so just look around.

Believe me, I had a hard time trusting that a cheapie drugstore shampoo was going to do a better job than the salon stuff. But now instead of losing my lowlights entirely after three shampoos, they fade gradually over three or four weeks. This shampoo took some getting used to, though; it cleans my hair, but because of the protective ingredients, I don't get that "squeaky clean" sensation. It felt at first like my hair wasn't getting clean enough, but that was just psychological. :)

I fully admit that I'm not a stylist, but this shampoo does a better job at maintaining my color than anything my stylist suggested. Like I said, it's not a perfect solution, but it's sure better than nothing!

    Good luck!

The problem isn't the shampoo, or the color. It's simply that you've overprocessed your hair. The hair is too porous to hold color any longer. I'm surprised you haven't seen some significant breakage. You can't change the color of the hair that frequently without incurring the wrath of the color gods

The only real fix is to allow it to grow out and maintain only the roots. Be very careful about combing color through to the ends at touchup time.

I suggest a temporary haircoloring (something like Roux Fanci-Ful rinse) to maintain the color of the ends until they get cut off.
