Keeping legal docs from your son/daughter?
My friend wants to get married but says in order to get a marriage certificate she needs her birth certificate. Her parents are resenting her for getting married and keeping her birth certificate and social security card from her. She is over the age of 18. Is this illegal or are they allowed to do that? (Sorry if this is not exactly family law). Thanks you!

She can get her own copy of her birth certificate by either going in person to the Bureau of Vital Statistics or the courthouse in the county she was born in or do it by mail.

If she is needing another copy of her social security card she can go to the Social Security Office and fill out a request to get another one as well.

I wouldn't fight over this with them, just get new copies it doesn't cost that much and you can do it all online. You can go here to get a new BC and here to get an application for a new Social Security Card.

Yes, you merely go and get new copy of each, people lose theirs all the time, takes a few days to a week or so.
