I have read the discussions on commode water level. My question is a bit different.

I wish to put vinegar in my commode and allow it to stand at a level of several inches above "normal" for 24 hours or so.

Is there a work-around to overcome (temporarily) the design water level to allow the action described above?

When I add the vinegar it doesn`t raise the level (probably for design reasons)I have tried the obvious, i.e. added mass to the water but the level soon adjusts itself.

Anxiously awaiting an answer with vinegar bottle in hand. :)

For every inch of water or vinegar you add to the toilet an inch goes down the drain because you are already at the top level of the integral trap. I have never done this but you should be able to plug the toilet drain with the right size solid rubber ball. Just be sure you can get that ball back out. Now for the real question, what are you trying to do? Got some bad stains or what?

Bad stains (rust type). I had thought of plugging drain but didn`t think of rubber ball. I may try that. I just thought there may be some way of defeating the design but guess not. Vinegar has always been my top "home helper" with stains -

I did try lining the bowl with paper towels and then dousing the towels with vinegar so they would stay in place and act on the stains. That didn`t work out probably because the amount of vinegar contacting the stains through the paper was insufficient.

OK you are actually going about this backwards a bit. You can plung the toilet to remove much of the water and then squirt some gel type toilet bowl cleaner and allow to sit for an hour. You can also try Whink which is great on simple rust marks. Whink Rust Stain Remover Raising the level of the water may get you above the stain but you are diluting your ceaner too much.

Thanks. The method I outlined would not dilute the claner too much I think if I can stop the level going down. It would be fifty-fifty or better. I do appreciate your suggestion of gel type cleaners and may try it, but, honestly, I have found vinegar tovbe the best (and Ive tried many) for the type of rust stain in this area anyway.

Perhaps a combination of plunging the water level down and then plugging with a ball before adding vinegar may be the a good hybrid approach.
