I have a relatively new (2 years) maytag electirc dryer that won't heat. The issue started when the circuit breaker tripped and had to be reset. Now the dryer has power and will run but not heat. I have seen on other postings that there are a variety of reasons that the dryer may not be heating but I am wondering if the tripped breaker indicates one possible reason over the others?

I checked the vent and it seems clear - also ran the dryer with the vent disconnected and it did not heat either.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The tripped breaker indicates an overload. I suspect that the heating element shorted to its sheath. The overload burned out the heating element and blew the circuit breaker. I think you'll need to replace the heating element.

To test whether my assumption is correct, disconnect the dryer from the power (pull the plug). Locate the two connections to the heating element. Remove the lead wire from one end (or both, if you wish -- you'll have to do that eventually if it's failed). Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the two ends. A normal heating element will have less than 10 ohms of resistance between the two ends. (240 volts divided by the number of amps that it draws = the resistance expected). If the heating element is "open", you'll have essentially an infinite reading between the two ends.

amatuerhour- to test the heating elemeny: for a open circuit:: { both test should be run at the same time you do this one,the other test is to see if it is grounded:: ok lets start: pull the power cord out of wall receptical:: pull unit
Out from the wall ::remove the back panel::{ #1-} set the volt ohm meter to rx-1 scale, remove the wires from the
Wire terminals on the heating element< put the meter probes into the wire terminals :: {#2-} if the meter reads between 8 and 20 ohms -the heater is good :: if the meter reads high< the heater is defective and need to be replaced ::{ #1- now to test to see if heater is grounded;}; leave one meter probe in the wire terminal and meter set the same:: { #2-} with the other probe <touch the metal duct with it { the meter probe} ; if the meter reads high it is good:: if the meter needel swings toward the low end of the scale then the meter is defectuive and needs replaced ;; otherwiseremember to hook wires back up you tiook off:: {#3]- {note_ while we'reheer lets test the overheat protectors;; these will be found on the air duct:: number one-} power to dryer is stull off:: meter is still set on the rx-1 scale ::( #2) disconnect one of the wires from the protector: now clip the meter probes to the wire terrminals ::( #4)if the meteer reads zero ohms the protector is good:: if it reads high then it is defective and needs replaced:: note _ if your protectors have three terminals on them <use the two out side wier terminals:: { petrico - is right on whart he wrote <he just left out a few words and other things to test:: } i hope this helps and answers your questions:: :if you still have trouble with the dryer come back onto this post : if i have answered you question then please rate my answers using the orange box below :: thanks and have a better day tomorrow and god bless:: f.b.e.
