Pursuit of a policy of social responsibility
An increasing number of public listed companies in Malaysia have expressed their willingness to consider their wider social responsibilities. This often involves them in voluntarily undertaking extra responsibilities and costs; for example in order to reduce pollution, they may decide to treat waste products to a higher standard than required by legislation.
In your opinion, does the pursuit of a policy of social responsibility necessarily involve a conflict with the objective of shareholder wealth-maximisation. Justify.
