SSI - SSD and Child Support
My ex husband and I have a child support order that he rarely pays. He has been on unemployment for the last year. He had a bad accident involving brain trauma - I took care of him and we together applied for Disability. As soon as he was better -he seems fine mentally but walks impaired - He walked out and has not helped me with child support since. At the support hearings he says that he is waiting for his Disablility either SSI or SSD. He now says that he got one of them but won't tell me which one and that he does not have to pay support anymore. Is this true? And if it is what can I do about financial help with my son? Is there someone I can contact?

He has to pay support on SDI but not on SSI. SSI is a kind of welfare program and in some states (California for example) it is not considered income for child support purposes.

Talk to your local child support agency about collection of support.
