I just brought home a pembroke corgi. He's 5 months old now, and has been in my house for almost a week now. Things were going great with the housebreaking. He didn't have any accidents until yesterday. Then today, I took him outside, he went potty and we came back in the house. He started acting up so I gave him a 10 minute timeout and gated him in a section of the house. Then I let him out and was watching him walk around and he just started peeing in the middle of the room. Was that an act of defiance, because I noticed he's been getting more comfortable and has not been "listening" to our no's as much as he used to. Any thoughts/insight is appreciated!

I had a friend who's basset did the same thing. She would pee out of anger, for being left alone or being yelled. Make sure you rule out any infections going on. If there is none. Try kennel training. It gives the dog a safe place to go. Don't use the kennel as a punishment though only for when you are leaving during the day. The puppy is still young and very easily trainable. Anytime the puppy pees inside bring him outside. Tell him no and then put him outside. Make sure you catch him doing it and then put him out side. The puppy won't remember if you see the pee 15 minutes later and then place him outside. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the feedback! We are using the crate right now. He sleeps through the night in it and we put him in there for naps. His "time-out" area is just a small section of the house that we have fenced off. He hasn't had an accident in either of those places yet. Just his "defiant pees" inside. Guess it's just a matter of repetition?

He's my first dog, and I've been trying to be good about establishing "dominance." It's hard though. Right now I feel like the more I discipline him, the more he acts up.

He's always eating weeds outside, which makes him throwup. So first I tried telling him no, which worked for a little bit. However, now he won't listen unless I use the clicker training method and give him a treat when he stops. He's very treat-motivated, and doesn't seem to feel rewarded by our praise alone. Does anyone have any methods for making a "treat-motivated" dog listen to you without treats?

You have to slowly weed out the treats. It takes time.
Also most dogs eat weeds and grass because there stomach
Is upset. Perhaps the food?

Mine eat grass because they are idiots... no stomach upsets...

A lot of dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach or have eaten something that didn't agree with them.
From experience every dog (apart from mine) that eats grass always throws up yellow foam then is right as rain. It's always best to check with your vet though.

Where is he having the 'accidents'?
In a similar spot each time?

If so you need to clean the area thoroughly with an enzyme based cleaner to remove any odor to deter him fom going there again.

Also for places like chair legs that get used a lot as toilets, you can loosely wrap foil around them and put some at the base... dogs hate the sounds the foil makes when they pee on it.
