If measurement is in feet, multiply length times width and divide by 27

That would be the formula for cubic yards, such as when determining the needs for concrete.
Divide by 9 for square yards, if the measurements are in feet to begin with.

Joshua20, for 62 by 62, if the measurements are in inches, you would need approximately 3 square yards, 2.97 sy to be exact. If the measurement in question is for sheet goods, such as vinyl (for a small bath) or carpet (for the smallest room ever built), since shhet goods are most often 12'wide, with the infrequent 6' or 13'6 or 15' widths, assuming you were using 12 foot goods, you'd need to purchase 6.88 sy. When the sheet goods have a pattern repeat, you do generally need to purchase at least 1/2 repeat additional in order to center the pattern.

62 ft x 62 ft would be 427.11 sy If there is a depth compenent as well, you'll need to multiply the square footage by the depth and divide by 27 after converting all your measurements to feet.

    that's wrong Chuck

    in units of feet

    (length x width)/9 = sq. yds.

    (length x width x height)/27 = cubic yards
