    Portal caval shunt operation
Hi, This is my first time on here and I was wondering if anyone knows what food I can give my one year old Yorkshire Terrier, he has just had surgery and has had a Portal Caval Shunt operation and at the moment is on special Hepatic dog food. In one month I can introduce some normal dog food and was wondering if anyone can suggest a good food for this complaint.

Would you not have to feed your dog a low protein food in this instant? I had a dog with only 1/3 of her liver functioning and had to make her food daily with little or no protein at all...

Yes, Belinda, It will have to be a low a proteinb food. I phoned Burns Pet food today and they advised to buy their Fish, chicken or duck food. Thank you for your answer.

I use to take one boneless , skinless chicken breast, boil in 3 cups of water, then I'd mash the meat, add to this either rice or noodles, two tums (for calcium) an egg (scramble it first) and two dog vitamin tablets. Some will boil lean hamburg or fish... instead of chicken.

Thanks Melinda, I will try this method if he doesn't like the Burns dog food. It is so kind of you to take the time to answer my question.
